What is Network Security?
Network security consists of the policies and practices adopted to prevent and monitor unauthorized access, misuse, modification, or denial of a computer network and network-accessible resources.
Network security is thus a vital part of the security architecture of a computer network.
Network security is the umbrella term that defines computer network protection in the IT community. Security can be defined as a protective barrier that lies between a hacker and a system’s data, and that often depends on the user’s access privilege to a system. Or, as the Computer Security Institute defines it, “It is the technology that will potentially prevent unauthorized access to a system or data to a degree necessary to protect its legitimate value.”
Network security encompasses more than firewalls and IDSs. Think of your network as a series of connected rooms and entrances. A screen door separates the lobby from the rooms. This door does not have the strength to keep all intruders out, and therefore some doors have the power to open and close. There are a variety of doors that can be open or closed to control access to a room. For example, you might have a door from the front of the hotel that can only be opened from the lobby, a central door that can only be opened from each floor, and a fire door whose only purpose is to seal the room. Security in a network consists of so many different doors, and each door may or may not be capable of keeping intruders out, depending on its location. There may also be smoke alarms and sprinklers, which provide a sense of security by helping prevent a fire from spreading.
The term Network Security is important because it encompasses many different aspects of computer network security. There are some common aspects to network security, but the actual approach should vary from system to system. For example, a firewall may not be able to block all types of intruders.
Network security is critical to give the user the confidence that each network component, such as an operating system, server, application, application server, or database server, is secure and working properly. Network security’s goal is to make it impossible for users to discover or exploit a network weakness.
As mentioned in the begining, various organizations have taken different approaches to the subject and, as a result, have provided varying degrees of protection but all have been efforts to ensure the safety of data and information in transit and in the organization. Network security is an evolving field and the solutions that are most successful today may not be effective tomorrow in the face of new threats and technologies.
